Action Plan for an Age-Friendly Miami-Dade

If a person reaches age 65, they are now likely to live well into their 80s or beyond. In Miami-Dade County, over 500,000 residents are already aged 60 or older, and that number will continue to grow in the coming decades. As our population ages, the strength of our response will depend on how thoughtfully we prepare our communities to support lifelong well-being, independence, and opportunity for all.

That is why the Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative (AFI) proudly launched the 2025–2030 Community Action Plan, an update that may be our most ambitious and inclusive strategy to date. Co-developed by a cross-sector coalition of partners including AARP Florida, the Alliance for Aging, Miami-Dade County, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade, Miami-Dade Transportation and Planning Organization, United Way Miami, and Urban Health Partnerships, this living document outlines practical actions to improve housing, transportation, health services, community engagement, and much more. Grounded in real data, guided by community voices, and built through a Results-Based Accountability framework, the plan serves as a roadmap to shape a more livable Miami-Dade one where older adults of all backgrounds can thrive with dignity, purpose, and joy.

As a local leader, service provider, or engaged resident, we invite you to explore the Community Action Plan and identify the strategies most relevant to your community’s needs. Whether your focus is on housing, transportation, health access, or social connection, the plan offers flexible, actionable approaches that can be adapted and scaled to create meaningful change across Miami-Dade County.

Some of the ways you can take action at the individual, organizational or municipal level:

Together, we can build a more age-friendly Miami-Dade where all residents, people of all ages are valued, supported, and able to thrive. Explore the plan, share it widely, and take that next step toward a community for all ages.
